My Father
With Father’s Day quickly approaching, I can’t help but think about my father, who moved on a long time ago to his home in Heaven. So many beautiful memories to reflect on. One that comes quickly to mind is piling into the rear of his truck, with hot dogs, the necessary condiments, along with marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate. He would take us to the beach where we’d have a hot dog roast and make our s’mores. It was always so exciting. Yummy memories.
Then there were the many mornings when he’d turn on the light in my bedroom and start singing out loud “Oh What A Beautiful Morning.” As children, this was not a big hit as we struggled to open our eyes. But it got us “up and atom,” as he used to say.
Then there were the times when I’d go with him to the Veterans Hospital where he’d sing for them. You see, Dad was a child prodigy. He had a beautiful voice, and people loved to listen to him. He and Mom would practice his singing – mom playing the piano – while I was in my crib. I still have a recording from 1959 where he’d tell me, “Now, hush baby. Quiet.” Dad surrounded me with music throughout my life. What a blessing it was and still is. For this singing gift was passed on to my son, who is a creative music director at a church in San Diego.
As a young mother, Dad would take my son fishing often. He had his favorite fish ponds where he’d taken him. Dad used to fly fish along the Snake River in Idaho. It was one of his favorite past times. He’d take us camping, and we’d play tennis together, another one of his favorite things to do.
There are so many memories. While not all of them are good, there are far more good ones. I am blessed to have so many. In my life growing up, I had a glimpse of what a good father was like. I’m so grateful for that experience because it enabled me to understand better the love of my heavenly Father.
Today I have a passion for the Father’s love. Jesus told us that He is the only way to the Father. Our heavenly Father’s love is unconditional for us. It is passionate for us. He sooo loves us that He sent His best to reconcile us back into relationship Him: Jesus! His only begotten Son.
As Father’s Day quickly approaches, my prayer is that we will all experience the depth, the width, the length, and the height of the love He has for us. And as we get a glimpse into His amazing love, everything else will pale in comparison.
