Palm Sunday – The Triumphant Process

Jesus! King of Kings! Lord of Lords! God manifest in the flesh! Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphant procession, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem, with a multitude of people shouting “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!” (Matt. 21:9)

We begin the story when Jesus and His disciples arrive in Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, and He tells two of His disciples to go into the village and untie a donkey and colt that they would find tied there and bring them to Him. (Matt. 21:2) Jesus was making preparations for His triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

He told these two disciples “if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” (Matt. 21:3; Mark 11:3)

It happened just that way. They went and found the donkey and her colt tied by the door outside and loosed it. As they did this, they were questioned, “What are you doing, losing the colt?” (Mark 11:4-7) These two disciples answered them exactly as Jesus told them to and found favor with the owner as Jesus said they would.  News quickly got out into the village about what these two disciples had said and done because we see in Matt 21:8 and Mark 11:8 many got busy and made preparations for the arrival of their Messiah, their King. They were excited to be receiving Him. Matt. 21:8 tells us a great multitude spread their garments in the way, and others cut down branches from the trees and created a “royal” runway for Jesus to ride down.

As Jesus entered into Jerusalem, riding on the colt, the multitudes started praising Jesus shouting “Hosanna!” Some there had witnessed Jesus calling Lazarus forth from the dead. (John 12:17) They were excited to be receiving this great prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.

Jesus knew the Master plan intimately and came to fulfill it. We see in Zech. 9:9 that the prophet Zechariah prophesied this happening about 500 years before.

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

It’s incredible to see how specific the prophecy was and how Jesus exactly fulfilled it. Jesus knew that this would happen just as it was written. As the Creator, Jesus had and has authority over all creation.

“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” (Col. 1:16-17).
