Psalm 91:1

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Ps. 91:1 NKJV).

What a wonderful promise this is! It’s a promise of both “God’s favor” and “God’s protection” for everyone and anyone who chooses to dwell in the secret place of the Most High — Not for those who just visit there. This is about abiding in Christ (John 15:4). This is speaking of those who make the Lord their habitation (Psalm 91:9), where they “live.” Selah. A person can be born again, though, without abiding in Christ. This is a choice each of us makes individually.

How do you “abide in Christ?” How do you “abide under the shadow of the Almighty?” Picture it as “lodging.” Picture a beautiful cabin in the woods with a running river and streams just outside the door. This is a picture of the protection offered to each of us.

The Hebrew word (Strong’s H6738) for “shadow,” TSEL, is also “defense.” So, those who continuously dwell in the secret place of the Most High will find themselves safe and secure in Him. Another wonderful picture of this is a mother hen with wings spread out for her little chicks. All the little chicks who come under her wing find both protection and shelter.

What a loving God we serve! Angels bow before Him! Heaven and earth adore Him! God is love (1 John 4:8) so to abide in God means we have to abide in His love (1 John 4:16). Those who haven’t heard the good news of God’s unconditional love and grace through Jesus can’t abide in His love, and the wrath of the Old Testament law will keep them from receiving God’s love and blessings. That’s why it is so important to teach them about how much God loves them. That they are highly favored and deeply loved by God Himself.
